I Found a Great Way to Network, Without Actually Having to “Network”

I personally hate networking. It’s mad awkward to me (if you’re an introvert like me, you totally get this) and I never know how to approach people without them thinking I have an “alternative motive,” when really, I just like to get to know people and make a great connection.

So, these new jobs in a CASTING OFFICE have been a great way for me to meet people in the industry and fellow actors in a low-pressure and non-forceful way.

I recently just got jobs in TWO casting offices. Call me butter cuz I’m on a ROLL!

WHY?

Not because I need the jobs, but because learning about casting and the “behind the scenes” process is so critical if you want to make yourself a better (and more successful) actor.

I’m networking. I’m IN CASTING ROOMS watching other actors. I see how they behave and how the casting director responds.

It’s been an amazing experience so far. Granted, its my first week and I’m still in the “newbie” stage. But having the opportunity to sit in a room with a casting director is a sure-fire way to get them to remember you. YOU as in the professional, awesome, personable you. Not just the actor who came in for three minutes after your agent or profile fit what they are looking for. Ick.

This business is allllllllll about networking. Which, lets be honest, sounds very tedious and can be such a letdown. Because really, we join this profession because we love the art of it, not the networking part! It’s like, “What the hell! Isn’t my talent enough?”
The answer is NO.

You need to find ways to get your face out there to the people who will put you in your dream role. Meet them on a personal level. This is where people remember you most. a-dur.

So, after taking these jobs, I highly recommend you all do the same. Look for internships. Most are only once a week at casting offices or agencies, so you can find the time. They may not be a paying job, but the VALUE of the job is so much more than what you would make per hour. Meaning, the connections and skills you will learn are worth way more than a paycheck.

SIDE NOTE BUT IMPORTANT NOTE BELOW::::

Make sure you stay on top of your acting classes too.  Don’t blow an audition with your new friend casting director or agent by not being sharp in your craft. (how embarrassing!)
If you can’t afford classes, then click here to read my post on online acting classes. I recommend one class I use and it’s A-mazing!

Where to look to start “networking”

LA Casting is a great place to look for legit jobs in entertainment. From what I saw, most accept actors and are willing to train newcomers to the industry. LA Casting is where I found my casting internship, and I highly recommend going there first. HEADS UP: They do charge a membership fee to access this job-board. But they also post castings as well. It’s totally worth it! And if you’re an actor in LA, your going to need a profile here anyways.

From research, not personal experience, you can also try http://www.entertainmentcareers.net/. They have a ton of job postings and seem to have very legit, noteworthy companies in the entertainment industry on the site. Make sure you do your research before applying to any job.

Lastly, http://www.mandy.com/  is another good one that I’ve heard great things about. I personally didn’t like the way the site was set up. It looks super boring and phony to me! (It’s the marketing major in me that came out, sorry!) However, it is a legitimate site to find job postings in entertainment.

I hope you all found this post helpful in finding a way to network a fun and easy way (and sometimes makes you money!)
